October 2007
Male Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
Wildfowl started arriving in decent numbers during October. By the middle of the month there were over 11000 Pink-footed Geese at Martin Mere.

Most of the Whooper Swans, however, had not yet arrived and there were only a couple of hundred present.

When newly arrived, the wildfowl is very wary of the noise in the hides and tend to stay quite distant and you are generally restricted to taking group photos of flying birds...

...except on the rare occasion when a bird will come flying straight towards you.
