The photos above and below illustrate the huge difference that lighting conditions make to the appearance of a bird. The top photo was taken on a dull, overcast day, while the two below were taken on a clear day with the bird bathed in a bright orange glow from the setting sun.

In fresh winter plumage its colours are more subdued. In Goa, it can often be seen perched in the same bush as the more common Black-headed Buntings. The females of the two species are virtually identical, so mixed flocks like this allow a useful comparison of the subtle differences between the two.
