White-throated Sparrow
Zonotrichia albicollis
Maryland, USA - January 2000
White-throated Sparrows are common winter visitors to the eastern United States and are often found in large flocks.
Maryland, USA - January 2000
Like many other North American sparrows, their commonest foraging strategy is to use the 'double-scratce technique' in which the bird pushes the leaf litter to the side simultaneously with both feet to expose seeds buried in the ground. Individuals foraging in this way are easily detected by the rustling in the undergrowth.
