Tufted Duck
Aythya fuligula
Male - Lothian, Scotland - January 2006
Tufted Duck is a common freshwater diving duck in Britain and most of Northern Europe.
Female - Lothian, Scotland - January 2006
Female - Linlithgow Loch, Lothian, Scotland - January 2006
A few females have white undertail coverts, which has on occasion resulted in some individuals being erroneously reported as Ferruginous Duck. I suspect that this may have happened with the above bird, as a Ferruginous Duck was reported as being present at Linlithgow Loch the day before I took this photograph.
