| Like most of New Zealand's endemic birds, the Kaka has dramatically declined since the arrival of Europeans, mainly due to the introduction of mammalian predators such as cats, stoats, rats and Brush-tailed Opossums. It was formally common throughout North and South Island but is now only common on the offshore islands that are free from predators, with a few isolated populations surviving on the main islands. |
