Pied Stilt
Himantopus leucocephalus
Lake Benmore, New Zealand - November 2005
Miranda, New Zealand - November 2005
Pied Stilt is a relatively recent colonist in New Zealand. It is thought that they arrived from Australia in the early 1800's and spread rapidly throughout the country. Their rapid spread may have been helped by the conversion of lowland swamp forests into seasonally wet farmland by the European settlers who had also only recently arrived on the islands.

Pied Stilt is considered conspecific with Black-winged Stilt (H. himantopus) by many authorities.
