Buller's Shearwater
Puffinus bulleri
All photos taken in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand - November 2005
Endemic to northern off-shore islands of New Zealand, Buller's Shearwater can be seen in quite high numbers in the Hauraki Gulf. Like most seabirds, they are vunerable to introduced predators on their breeding islands. On one of these islands, feral pigs were eradicated in 1936. By 1981 the number of pairs on that island has increased from 200 to 200,000!
