| When threatened the Eastern Hognose Snake flattens its neck like a cobra, inflates it's body, hisses then strikes. If this doesn't deter the potential aggressor it will roll onto it's back with it's mouth wide open and play dead. All of this is purely an act. The strike is made with a closed mouth and if it is rolled onto it's stomach during the 'playing dead' display, it will immediately roll back onto it's back. It is very rare for Eastern Hognose Snakes to bite, even when handled. |
