Green Woodpecker is found in a wide variety of semi-open habitats throughout most of Europe. It mostly forages on the ground, where ants make up the majority of its diet.

The Iberian race sharpei is slightly shorter billed, lacks the dark markings around the eye and have a thin whitish line above the dark malar stripe which is more obvious in the females.
