Phalacrocoracidae : Cormorants

Double-crested Cormorant

Phalacrocorax auritus

Maryland, USA - January 2001

Double-crested Cormorants is North America's commonest cormorant.  It suffered a massive population crash in the middle part of the 20th Century due to persecution and the agricultural use of DDT.  Since being granted legal protection and the banning of the ecologically-devastating insecticide, Double-crested Cormorant numbers have recovered spectacularly.
