Psittacidae : Parrots

Hyacinth Macaw

Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

Pantanal, Brazil - August 2000

At 1m long, the Hyacinth Macaw is the largest parrot in the world. It has suffered enormously at the hands of the illegal cagebird trade and due to its continued downward population trend it was upgraded to 'Endangered' status by the IUCN in 2000. It has a total population estimated at only 5000-7500 birds.

Pantanal, Brazil - August 2000

It is not all doom and gloom, however, conservation projects in the Pantanal seem to be having some effect and the population in that area may be increasing.
