Booted Racquet-tail is very common in montane forests from coastal Venezuela to Bolivia. It is most abundant between 1600m and 2200m above sea level but is also fairly frequently found down to 1100m and up to 3000m
Males of the subspecies annae (below) differ from the Ecuadorian race melanantherus (above) in having buff-coloured leg puffs and a shorter tail with streamers that cross.
