I caught the unusual individual in the above photo in my garden light trap in late August. I haven't been able to find any reference to Common Wave having a similar upperwing pattern but, since the wing shape and size match Common Wave and there are no other British species which come close to matching it, I am pretty confident that this moth is indeed this species. A normally marked, if badly worn, individual is shown below.
