Both the Uncertain and the Rustic are common throughout most of England and Wales and are found in a wide variety of lowland habitats. They are very variable species and cannot be reliably separated on external morphological features alone.
It is by far the commonest moth attracted to my Nottinghamshire garden light trap during June and July with over 40 individuals often being caught on warm, still nights.
