Eastern Chipmunks hibernate throughout the cold winter months, but unlike most species that hibernate, they do not live off fat stores. Instead, they survive on stored food which they frequently wake up to eat.

If you take a walk in any eastern forest in the United States you are likely to be accompanied everywhere by the "chuck" calls of Eastern Chipmunks as they alert their neighbours to your presence.
