Eastern Red Squirrel
Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
Maryland, USA -June 2001
Although it is principly found in coniferous forests, the Eastern Red Squirrel can be found in any type of woodland which provides sufficient food and shelter.
Maryland, USA -June 2001
They are quite territorial and are often observed chasing Grey Squirrels. This behaviour has led to the erroneous story that Red Squirrels not only dominate their larger cousins, but also castrate them! In fact, the testes of Grey Squirrels are withdrawn into the abdomen during the non-breeding season so are not visible for most of the year.
