Green Vervet Monkey
Cercopithecus sabaeus
Senegambia Hotel, The Gambia - January 2003
Vervet Monkeys utter a wide variety of vocalisations and could almost be said to have a primitive language, since each of them convey a different meaning. For example, they have different alarm calls depending on the nature of the threat. The call made when a hawk or eagle is spotted is different from that of a large ground-based threat, which in turn is different from the alarm call for a snake.
