Painted Saw-scaled Viper / Palestine Saw-scaled Viper

Echis coloratus

As with all of the Saw-scaled Vipers, E. coloratus is considered to be one of the most dangerous snakes in the world.

E. coloratus is unusual among the vipers in that it lays eggs rather than giving birth to live young.

Saw-scaled Vipers get their English name from the specialised scales on its body that when rubbed together emit a "sizzling" warning sound which it would be wise not to ignore!
