April 2013

Grelag Goose (Anser anser)

The first half of April was unseasonably cold with all the lakes at Attenborough reserve frozen over.

Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)

Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)

Dunnock (Prunella modularis)

Things started warming up towards the end of the month and the reserve was suddenly inundated with spring migrants which all appeared to turn up at once. Common Whitethroats were abundant in the bramble scrub.

Common Whitethroat (Sylvia communis)

With the temperatures warming up, it was finally worthwhile putting the moth trap out in my garden again...

Streamer (Anticlea derivata)

Both Streamer and Shoulder Stripe are species that were new to my garden list. The violet tinge to the forewings of the Streamer indicate that this was a freshly emerged individual.

Shoulder Stripe (Anticlea badiata)

Clouded Drab, along with its cogeners Common Quaker and Hebrew Character, are common in the early spring.

Clouded Drab (Orthosia incerta)

Micromoths caught in the trap included the bird-dropping mimic Agonopterix alstromeriana.

Agonopterix alstromeriana

Caloptilia elongella
